We’ve all been there. You open a bottle, give it a swirl, stick your nose in – and immediately get hit with a whiff of something… funky. Not fruit. Not flowers. Feet. Actual feet. So what’s going on? Why does wine smell like feet, and should you be worried?

Wine tasting with a funky aroma – why does wine smell like feet?

Why Does Wine Smell Like Feet?

The most likely culprit: Brettanomyces (aka Brett). It’s a wild yeast that can thrive during winemaking – especially in reds. Some people call it “barnyard.” Others say “Band-Aid” or “horse blanket.” But let’s be honest: it’s foot-adjacent. And it’s divisive.

In small amounts, Brett can add complexity and intrigue. In large amounts, it smells like your rugby kit from 2012. And if you’re sensitive to it, even a tiny bit might ruin the glass.

Is It a Fault or a Feature?

This is where it gets spicy. Traditional French producers (looking at you, Rhône and Burgundy) sometimes accept a little Brett as “terroir.” Others see it as a flaw. New World winemakers tend to avoid it like the plague, often favouring cleaner, fruitier profiles.

So if your wine smells like feet, you’re not wrong – but you might just be drinking something more rustic or “natural.” Whether that’s a good thing is up to you.

Other Things That Smell Funky

  • Reduction – This is when wine smells like struck matches, cabbage, or sometimes rubber. Usually goes away with air.
  • Cork taint (TCA) – Wet cardboard, mouldy newspaper vibes. Not the same as Brett, but just as sad.
  • Volatile acidity – Think nail polish remover or vinegar. Often found in unstable natural wines or older bottles past their peak.

Not sure if it’s Brett or something else? Let it breathe. If the smell softens, you might be safe. If it still smells like your old trainers after 30 minutes, it’s probably just not for you.

Can You Drink It?

Yes. Wine that smells like feet is not dangerous – just divisive. Some wine lovers adore the funk. Others bin the bottle. If you’re curious, Wine Enthusiast explains Brett beautifully.

If the wine is otherwise balanced and tastes okay, go with it. But if the funk is overwhelming, feel free to call it a night – or turn it into a very experimental stew base.

Final Sip

Why does wine smell like feet? Because wine is alive. Sometimes it’s elegant. Sometimes it’s sweaty. And sometimes, that funk is intentional. Don’t panic. Just sniff, sip, and decide whether you’re into it. Or not.
